Birzebbugia - The seaside village of Birzebbugia is in the southwest of Malta. A bit further inland is Ghar Dalam, where preshistoric human remains suggest that humans may have come to Malta from Sicily about 5,800 years ago. Bones of dwarf hippopotamuses, elephants, and many other species found in the same cave showed that a quarter of a million years ago the island was connected by a land bridge to Sicily, but not to North Africa.
