This is a reproduction of an oil painting, Lilacs and Sunset, which is the view from one of my windows that I just happened to catch at sunset one spring, so it had to become a painting. It is a romantic image, full of feeling. I like to paint things I've never painted, especially when there is a challenge to use a sentimental image to express emotion, and still have it work as a serious painting. One of the things that interested me was that the image was comprised of the three secondary colors - green, orange and violet. Often my landscapes are gestural - the natural forms curve and stretch, like a dancer's arms; the horizon stretches its arms out in a romantic pose. This isn't something I plan, but since I have a closeness with trees and other living things, it seems to come out in my work. A sunset can be a 'cliche' image - however, if you think about it, having a huge, fiery yellow ball cross the sky every day is not a humdrum thing. It is pretty amazing! |
