Nancy Doyle Fine Art
This is a reproduction of an original oil painting, which I named Good Beach. (For me, names often come as a way to differentiate between paintings; since I do a number of works with the same subject matter, I need to distinguish them so that I can remember which title is which painting.) I called this painting Good Beach because I felt this is the best beach painting I've done so far. It has a bird's eye view of the beach, so the people and umbrellas spread from the bottom to the near top of the painting, with a high horizon line; and they form a flat patterning, with the bright colors of beachgoers and gear. I've been influenced greatly by 14th to 16th century Persian miniatures, which have these same characteristics. I like the color and the composition; it feels free to me, although it also has a lot of detail in the cross-section of humanity. It's like doing many little portraits in one painting - each person has a certain look, body English, etc. I like the bits of red in the ocean - an overpowering act of spontaneity - the red really makes the ultramarine blue sing.
