This is a reproduction of a charcoal drawing called
Cheyenne Warrior
. Native Americans have always been regarded with fascination by people around the world. Their presence and culture seem unique, and blessed with a wisdom and eloquence also unique. Their collective experience has too often been extremely difficult; yet they have survived and their rich culture continues to thrive even in mean circumstances. Since I was a teenager, I've been interested in them - their appearance, their culture, their words. The old Edward Curtis photographs, as well as other photographers' depictions, with their sepia tones, lend themselves to the use of charcoal in creating an image. Charcoal itself is a natural tool, made from burnt wood. It conveys the soft feeling of fur, feathers, and animal skins worn in earlier times. But is the faces which express the strongest presence - strength, pride, patience, understanding.
